The teardrop shape is the boteh, a motif with Persian roots that became central to Kashmiri shawl weaving. European mills ƒ?? particularly in the Scottish town of Paisley ƒ?? copied those shawls through the nineteenth century, and the English name stuck to the copy rather than the original.
